Course Topics
Patients with persistent pain often carry the weight of past failures. In the clinic, it’s common to encounter:
✖ Patients who aren’t optimistic about recovery.
✖ Skepticism about the treatment plan.
✖ Resistance stemming from prior disappointments or misinformation.
✖ A lack of trust in the clinician or the process.
After This Module, You’ll Be Able To:
✔ Inspire hope and engage patients using evidence-based strategies.
✔ Uncover the root causes of patients’ skepticism and resistance
✔ Understand the neuroscience of how expectations change pain processing
✔ Help patients embrace realistic hope and become open to the therapy process.
✔ Navigate resistance and misinformation to build trust and foster buy-in.
✔ Reframe negative beliefs with communication techniques to set the stage for meaningful change.
Fear and worry are common and significant barriers to recovery, keeping patients stuck in a difficult cycle that prevents meaningful progress. In the clinic, it’s common to encounter:
✖ Patients stuck in a cycle of fear or worry about reinjury or worsening pain.
✖ Avoidance behaviors that are deeply ingrained and challenging to change.
✖ Reluctance to re-engage in activities due to past setbacks or failures.
✖ A struggle to balance reassurance with realistic goal-setting as a clinician.
After This Module, You’ll Be Able To:
✔ Understand how fear alters the nervous system and amplifies pain perception.
✔ Help patients uncover and address their specific fears and worries
✔ Develop graded exposure plans to safely reintroduce avoided activities.
✔ Foster trust ensuring patients feel supported throughout the recovery process.
Exercise is a cornerstone of pain therapy, but it’s one of the most challenging strategies to implement effectively. Common obstacles include:
✖ Exercise makes pain feel worse instead of better.
✖ Patients misinterpret normal discomfort as a sign of harm or damage.
✖ Past failures leave patients feeling discouraged and unmotivated to try again.
✖ Patients give up quickly, frustrated when results aren’t immediate.
✖ Everything hurts, making it hard to know where to start
After This Module, You’ll Be Able To:
✔ Understand the science of why exercise can either increase or decrease pain.
✔ Create movement plans for patients who feel discouraged and unmotivated.
✔ Expand the role of exercise to target mood, sleep, and confidence.
✔ Help patients reduce the frequency of exercise-induced flare-ups.
✔ Effectively engage patients in taking the first steps toward new movement.-
Mind-body techniques like mindfulness can help patients reconnect with their bodies in a positive way, fostering resilience, calm, and pain relief. However, clinicians often encounter obstacles like:
✖ Patients feel their bodies are untrustworthy or even “the enemy” due to pain.
✖ Patients struggle to notice sensations beyond pain.
✖ Patients find that focusing on their body increases discomfort.
✖ Patients react to body sensations with fear, frustration, or worry.
✖ Patients either hyper-focus on pain or completely avoid tuning into their bodies.
✖ Mind-body techniques are perceived as abstract, difficult, or weird.
After This Module, You’ll Be Able To:
✔ Understand the science of interoception and body awareness.
✔ Apply practical strategies for combining attention, breath, and movement to reshape pain perception
✔ Make these approaches accessible by helping patients overcome barriers like distraction, skepticism, or discomfort
Pain impacts relationships and social dynamics. Patients and clinicians often face challenges like:
✖ Persistent pain leads to loneliness and withdrawal.
✖ Strained relationships worsen pain and slow recovery.
✖ Patients struggle to communicate their pain and get their needs met.
✖ Social factors are often missed during clinical assessments.
✖ Clinicians feel unprepared to address the role of relationships in recovery.
After This Module, You’ll Be Able To:
✔ Recognize how relationships, isolation, and communication impact outcomes.
✔ Understand the science of how social connections change our biology.
✔ Assess social dynamics during clinical evaluations.
✔ Equip patients with tools to express their pain and needs effectively.
✔ Guide families and partners toward supportive behaviors that promote recovery.
✔ Help patients reconnect socially and reduce isolation.
The magic ingredient in effective pain care is the quality of the therapeutic relationship with the patient. However, clinicians frequently face challenges such as:
✖ Patients hesitating to share openly.
✖ Professionals unintentionally invalidating the patient.
✖ Therapists feeling overwhelmed by the need “to fix” the patient’s problem.
✖ Burnout and compassion fatigue.
✖ Difficulty recovering from resistance or disagreements with the patient.
✖ Balancing your technical skills with relationship-building
After This Module, You’ll Be Able To:
✔ Understand the neuroscience of the therapeutic relationship.
✔ Transform your role from "pain-fixer" to inspiring patients to help themselves.
✔ Bring compassion and presence into your work.
✔ Skillfully navigate common challenges, such as misunderstandings or disagreements.
✔ Make your work more rewarding and less emotionally draining.
Manual (hands-on) therapies are among the longest-practiced traditions in pain care. However, they come with common challenges:
✖ Conflicting evidence about their role in modern pain care.
✖ Many approaches are rooted in outdated science.
✖ Effects are often short-lived.
✖ Some patients are so sensitive that touch becomes intolerable.
By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:
✔ Understand the new science of how touch therapies alleviate pain and how neuroscience-based frameworks can enhance manual therapy outcomes.
✔ Develop practical skills to tailor manual therapy for patients with persistent pain, hypermobility, or heightened sensitivities.
✔ Transform hands-on techniques from passive interventions into interactive experiences that deliver sustainable benefits.
✔ Use simple, appropriate touch techniques to provide relief—even if you primarily practice “non-touch” therapy.
With so many new pain science discoveries, we have exciting opportunities to really improve pain care, but it also comes with challenges:
✖ Too much research, making it hard to know what to read.
✖ So many topics that it often feels disconnected.
✖ Courses teach theory but fail to connect it to real-world practice.
✖ Clinicians get lost in the weeds and lose sight of the big picture.
By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:
✔ Simplify complex pain science into practical insights for better care.
✔ Explore the roles of the nervous system and immune system in pain.
✔ Dive deep into the brain’s role in pain (while going beyond just focusing on the brain!).
✔ Understand how pain impacts other systems in the body, including movement and stress responses.
✔ Explain neuroplasticity and how the body can adapt to create—or recover from—persistent pain.
✔ Apply pain science principles to craft personalized care plans for each patient.
✔ Grasp the complexity of each person’s pain experience without oversimplifying it.
✔ See the big picture and connect research to real-world practice.
✔ Communicate modern pain science effectively without overwhelming patients.
